| GENERAL TIPS |
Rain Gear
If at all possible keep your rain gear packed in an easy to reach area of your pack. You never know when mother nature will toss a storm your way. The only thing worse then getting wet is backpacking with a wet pack. |
Lunch
In most cases you should keep lunch down to prepared meals. Keep them packed in an easy access part of your backpack. This way you don't need to unpack all of your cooking supplies when it's lunch time. |
New Boots
What you didn't know? Well if you didn't know already you need to make sure to break in those boots before you start in on the trail. This is a tip that will keep you from getting additional blisters. Ouch! |
Overnight Hiking Cabin Lodging
So you've wanted to do thru-hike but you don't want to sleep on the ground? While this may be hard for some of us to understand we still want to offer a suggestion.
Try staying in a rental cabin. For example there are numerous cabins along the Appalachian Trail including Gatlinburg cabins. |

Frost Bite
If you suspect that you have frost bite DO NOT RUB YOUR HANDS TOGETHER. Frostbite is caused by the formation of ice crystals on and in your skin. Rubbing your the frostbitten skin causes more damage. |
